Phaya Thai covers the area between Siam and Victory Monument, with Phaya Thai Road — a major road covered by the BTS Sukhumvit Line – It begins at the south side of Victory Monument in Ratchathewi District and continues until Sam Yan Intersection in Pathum Wan District, where it intersects with Rama IV Road. Phaya Thai District is named after this road. Fun Fact: Since its creation in 1966, however, the district has been subdivided several times, so that now Phaya Thai Road is no longer within Phaya Thai District.
Although Phaya Thai is less glamorous than nearby Ratchaprasong, its wide variety of cheap, interesting shopping malls and great dining options make it a fun part of Bangkok to visit and a great place to fill your bags with new clothes for next to nothing. Phaya Thai is maybe best known for Pratunam – an area packed with shopping malls selling wholesale clothes and electronics.
Phaya Thai is also popular for the Ari district, a leafy hub of specialty coffee shops and outdoor dessert cafes, plus stylish European and modern Thai restaurants which double as craft beer hangouts and cocktail bars. Quirky boutiques sell homegrown labels, while neighborhood malls offer fashion and groceries. Another notable stop is Sanam Pao, which has quickly become known for its casual & chic hangouts. Wat Phai Tan is a peaceful Buddhist temple with ornate arched roofs. Well-paved footpaths encourage you to walk from one place to another. There are also plenty of little alleys teeming with street food stalls, many of which are tree-lined enough to make for a pleasant stroll. This part of town is pretty evenly split between residents and non-residents due to all the offices, while there’s also a pretty high turnover of people moving in and out.
In the heart of Phaya Thai you find the Phaya Thai BTS station. The skytrain takes you swiftly in or out of Bangkok. Phaya Thai is also the area you’ll arrive in if you catch the Airport Rail Link into Bangkok from Suvarnabhumi Airport.
