Just 40 years ago, Sathorn district was farmland. A long road with rice patties divided by residential mansions. It has is in a few decades transformed into the one of the Manhattan of Bangkok. Sathorn road starts at Lumpini park and stretches down to the Chao Praya river. This modern, cosmopolitan district is the home of banks, insurance companies and the corporate headquarters of multinational companies in Thailand. Sathorn road is the home of high risers, housing offices, up-scale hotels and apartments in Bangkok.
If you are a food lover, you will definitively enjoy the huge selection of high-end international restaurants as well as the large variety of restaurant, serving up both local and international cuisine. There is also of course local street food vendors to be found. All conveniently located in one place.
Sathorn also borders to Bangkok’s largest park, Lumpini Park, is a great place to walk or run, rent a boat, take a fitness class, or just to relax. It’s within walking distance to many parts of the Sathorn neighborhood and is a real gem that seems miles away from the hustle and bustle of central Bangkok. Those new to the city will surely also enjoy visiting the old-world district down by the river, that offers a more historical view of Bangkok. Sathorn is for sure the district of contrasts.
Sathorn is still developing and as it does, a mature and sophisticated crowd are relocating here. Naturally, trendy and upmarket restaurants and bars are being created by savvy businesspeople to cater for this demographic. Home to some of the swankiest hotels in the city, much of Sathorn is also about the Chao Phraya River, where one can still experience why Bangkok was known as the Venice of the East, with plenty of fine dining, hidden alleys and romantic spots to spend lazy time watching the sun set and river meander by. Sathorn can be divided into four centers, each with its own BTS station and its own distinction. Be sure to explore them all!
