Ratchathewi is hard to miss. As The logistic hub of Bangkok, if you have ever taken a mini-bus from or to Bangkok, you have most likely visited Ratchathewi. It is a central and busy part of Bangkok best known for the Victory Monument, a giant phallic obelisk dedicated to the 1940 Franco-Thai war, in the middle of the giant roundabout, surrounded by food and snacks, and vendors selling last minute necessities to travelers.
Because of its logistic significance, Ratchathewi offers a big variety of small bars and shops to cater both travelers and locals. The most famous is probably Saxophone, known for its food, friendly atmosphere and exceptional live bands on stage. Another significant attraction to be found in Ratchathewi is the Suan Pakkad Palace Museum. It was originally the home of Prince and Princess Chumbhotpong Paripatra, who converted it into a museum. Four traditional Thai houses interlinked with covered hallways are home to Thai artwork and antiques including Ban Chiang pottery dating back 4,000 years.
Ratchathewi borders Pathum Wan separated by the famous Khlong Saen Saep canal, with the busy loud taxi boats that takes you from Bangkapi in the east of Bangkok to Dusit in the west. Hands down, the fastest and most exotic way to travel through Bangkok. Seeing Bangkok from the perspective of the waterways as opposed to busy jammed up trafficked streets. It also offers the Airport link Terminal at Makkasan taking you comfortly to Suwannabhumi Airport.
Ratchathewi is the home of the famous Pratunaam market, selling whole sale fashion and computers and IT related electronics at Pantip Plaza. Pratunaam also offers a fantastic choice of restaurants and street food vendors. The Bayooke Tower 2 landmark, Bangkoks highest building, can be seen from afar.
For those who wants a break from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, Santhiphap Park offers a secret gem for refuge. Santiphap Park is a 10 minute walk from the Victory Monument in the Pratunam area. Despite it’s size, Santiphap is a nice park with plenty to see. In the largest pond in the north of the park is the sculpture of the bronze dove of peace with an olive branch in its mouth. The park is gladly visited by locals from the area. You can also enjoy the beautiful flowers, plants, more that 30 different chirping birds and playing squirrels. Santiphap Park is a lovely park to chill out in the shade, go for a walk or do some sports. Therefore, if you are in the neighborhood of the Victory Monument and you need some greenery, you know where to go.
